On the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary, a team of 150 students and faculty of S.P. Mandali’s Prin. L. N. Welingkar Institute of Management Development (WeSchool) volunteered to undertake a cleanliness and beautification drive at the Matunga Central railway station in Mumbai. The drive organized in spirit of the Swacch Bharat Abhiyaan and the Central Railway’s Community Day celebrations, raised awareness on the importance of cleanliness. As part of this initiative, the students and the faculty members engaged in cleaning the station premises, painting and beautification, trimming grass and other related activities.
Commenting on the initiative, Smt. Ety Pandey, Chief Commercial Manager, Central Railway (Mumbai) said, “I am impressed to see the enthusiasm of students from Welingkar Institute of Management joining us in today’s community day celebration at Matunga C.R. Station. Cleanliness is essential and we are happy to involve the youth on connecting over hygiene awareness among the travellers. I am proud to share that our staff constantly endeavors in maintaining the premises of the station clean throughout the year. ”
Suggesting on the responsibility of citizens was Smt. Meena S. Santi, Station Manager, Matunga C. R., saying,”Maintaining cleanliness is the duty of every passenger. As responsible citizens, we can contribute to cleanliness by not littering and advising the fellow travellers to keep the premises clean. It must become a part of our routine travel.”
Speaking at the event, Prof Dr. Uday Salunkhe, Group Director, WeSchool said, “I am proud to share that our students are driving this initiative with the team at Matunga C.R. Station. The drive is an affirmation of WeSchool’s core values ’We link and care’. We wish to continue pursuing our Prime Minister’s vision of a ’Swacch Bharat’ by sensitising the community and the youth to keep the environment clean.”
WeSchool has always been at the forefront of ensuring environmental sustainability. We have installed solar panels for the hostels and have minimised the use of packaged water bottles. For campus events, WeSchool has discontinued the practice of felicitation with flower bouquets and instead gifts seeds for urban residential farming or sponsors underprivileged students education on behalf of the dignitaries or gifts handwoven ethnic stoles by Northeast artists.
All these initiatives are in sync with one of the core values of the Institute which is ”We Link and Care”. At WeSchool, we are incorporating aspects of sustainable development in its management curriculum with the objective of nurturing a sense of responsibility among its future managers and leaders.
