‘Careers and Emerging trends in Finance’ was theme of the talk with panelists with Ms. Radhika Gupta – CEO of Edelweiss Asset Management and Ms. Deepa Poncha– HR Centrum Group. Prof Dr. Kanu Doshi – Dean Finance at Welingkar Institute of Management moderated the session with his knowledgeable inputs.
Prof. Kanu Doshi, started by stating that Raghuram Rajan once said “It is not the benevolence of bread maker it is because of his wish to earn money.” He meant that it was his wish where the economy and finance starts. He added that Mr. Rajan, said that he found it very hard to get placement in his college days even though he was a topper. The reason was he got wore bright white socks on black suit.Basically, he wanted to conclude that Finance is very a serious field and something as basic as socks also play an important role while hiring.
Following which, Ms. Radhika Gupta put forth things she has learned in her course of career and the things she looks for while hiring. She started by saying that when she started her graduation, she was 18, she was naïve, she chose to study in the filed of investment banking in technology. She selected it because everyone around her chose the subject. 90% of her peer group wanted to pursue it. But after 3 years everyone left. They all went forward with herd mentality and didn’t know what was right for them. As a lesson she advice students to not select a path because it’s right thing to do for your future or because friends are doing so. Do it because you interested and passionate. And also know there is never a right career.
She added that Learnability and adaptability is what she looks for when she is hiring. She recommended to keep ourselves updated in the dynamic environment, not to hurry, if we are good then no one can stop you from growing.
Ms Deepa suggested students to be passionate and sincere about whatever they do. She spoke the serious role of passion is spirit of entrepreneurship and importance of flexibility in any field. She stated the equation of technology in today’s dynamic environment of data and technology.
Both speakers agreed the increasing role of technology in customer interface business such as retail and banking.
