A different kind of a Management Guru had walked in the WeSchool campus the other day to share his experiences and knowledge with the eager audience packed to the capacity in the auditorium. The young man wearing a simple T-shirt and a pair of jeans was accompanied by his bearded Mentor similarly dressed, both displaying similar traits of humility, simplicity, risk taking ability and the spirit of seeking the unknown .The young man was Lt. Cmdr Abhilash Tomy, the intrepid Dornier pilot from the Indian Navy, who has earned the distinction of being the first Indian, second Asian and seventy-ninth in the world to circumnavigate the world, solo, non-stop in a home-built sailboat named after the sea-goddess ‘Mhadei’. And with him was his Mentor, Cmdr Dilip Donde who had done a similar feat in 2009. when the idea of another Indian naval officer repeating Cmdr Donde’s feat, this time non-stop, was mooted in 2011 , the mantle naturally fell on Abhilash’s young shoulders, as he was not only raring to go but knew the challenge well having joined Cmdr Donde to repair and maintain the weather-beaten ‘Mhadei’ at every port where he had stopped during his voyage in 2009. And after many hours of gruelling training through some real rough waters, the day dawned when ‘Mhadei’ was handed over to him and he was told, “All yours …” .Mhadei belonged to him and he was Mhadei’s.

And it was all that he had. With the limitations of space in the sailboat ,his resources were few .He was the captain, the chief engineer, first mate and the second, the cadet and also the chef , Which meant waking every 30 minutes… tracking the weather, checking the boat, reading, doing the chores and then sleeping again for exactly 30 minutes, before waking up again and going through that same routine over and over again – like clockwork for 150 days . The Mhadei set sail from the Gateway in November 2012, it travelled through miles of vast expanses of seas and oceans, traits and gulfs , went round all the capes with only the occasional birds, whales and sharks as visitors. Sometimes, Abhilash would wake up to winds blowing at 130 kmph and waves topping 30 feet which would make him forget everything and concentrate on the job at hand – coaxing the Mhadei to safety through fiercely turbulent waves and frighteningly calm seas with nerves of steel. With just a couple of hours sleep, he was always watchful for the pirates who fortunately never showed up! With the wind, waves and sun guiding him, he went on relentlessly, all by himself, with no ‘real’ person to have a conversation with; communicating the story of his adventurous and perilous journey to the world thru his cell phone, thru his diary, his blog on the internet and the radio. Mhadei belonged to him and he was Mhadei’s.

When he landed back on shore, his feet were trembling. He had got so used to living on the deck of the boat that he couldn’t even take a few steps on the terra ferma. But, he doesn’t mind taking another round, because as soon as he landed, Abhilash asked his commander, “Sir, can I go for one more round, please? ”

”The waves were angry, they were playful, they were calm, the winds egged us on, the sun warmed us .They respected us; they were our friends whom we met on the way. We bring back no trophies; we bring back a lesson .Earth provides us with all our needs but not for our greeds. It tell us “All yours…” and we need to the learn that “Less is more”, said Abhilash, in conclusion.

Needless to mention, he got a standing ovation. All of us at WeSchool, including Prof Dr Uday Salunkhe, our Group Director, an adventure enthusiast himself, rose to our feet to salute the bravehearts that made every Indian proud and brought our Commander-In-Chief, Hon’ble Pranabkumar Mukerjee, President of India to felicitate the hero of Sagarparikrama II at the Gateway of India in April 2013. For Welingkarites , Abhilash’s message had a special meaning. For a B School that believes in mentoring the Global citizen leaders that will have the strength to override the challenges thrown by the turbulent times, escape the narrow confines of personal ambitions and goals to work for societal good , experiential learning has always been a part of our pedagogy. Apart from numerous corporate honchos starting with Indira Nooyi, thespians like the BIG B, philosophers Like Swami Parthsarthy, legendary adventurer-environmentalists like Apa Sherpa and Robert Swan, filmmakers like Prakash Jha and many other leaders from different walks of life, have shared their words of wisdom with the young mangers-to-be at WeSchool to help them change their lenses and refocus on career and life anew. Outdoor stints and expeditions help individuals to not only build confidence, trust and empathy, but generate understanding and transfer knowledge in a manner different from the traditional method of teaching where teachers simply transfer knowledge upon their students. Experiential learning allows WeSchool students to engage their own experiences and reflect upon them to further synthesize /analyze information and develop skills that are vital for the twenty-first century. It also helps to emphasize the value of working for the common good of diverse stakeholders across geographical and ethno-cultural borders; these collaborative efforts foster a deep sense of equality while fostering a deeper appreciation of one another’s diversity. Prof Charuhas Joshi, an adventure expert and seasoned mountaineer, is a faculty on board at WeSchool and is always devising newer ways to impart management education through adventurous outbound modules. With the ‘Triple A’ concept firmly in place and with a ‘Learning By Doing’ atmosphere, individuals can strengthen their skills in a meaningful way that helps to promote life-long learners .In a collaborative environment team players not only learn more about themselves and their communication skills, but those of others as well, thereby creating a stronger sense of togetherness and belonging. Adventure creates the space for them to learn more about both their personal behaviour and contributions as well as the group’s, and take the wisdom back to their everyday lives and routines to create positive change.

Young mangers that have learnt the technical outdoor skills, also acquire leadership, and environmental ethics. The world needs positive thinking and ethical leaders that will change not just the greediness prevailing in the corridors of economic powers but take great risks to work beyond realms of geo-political authorities and with creativity and innovation mindsets that they possess, influence the course of the world.

The lesson was indeed well learnt…LESS IS MORE !

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

End of yet another great convocation,
An evening of great nostalgia and celebration;
And as students step out with relief and fun filled chatter
The humble teacher stands by with good wishes on the platter;
Many walk past, while a few stop by and ask,
As Faces and names begin to unmask;
There are those who thank him for the knowledge bestowed,
While others walk past with feelings untold;
For the student it is the end of two years of learning,
For the teacher it is the end of two years of selfless caring;
And as the crowd gets thinner,
the humble teacher walks a loner;
and what gives him the inner willing ?
to put in another two years of sharing and caring ?
is it the hope and desire of gaining ?
Nay, my friend – it is his life’s mission to help others in succeeding !

What emerged out of this creative endeavour were business plans that were also solutions for issues faced by both rural as well as urban population i.e. financial services for the urban underprivileged, de-congestion through improved traffic sense, improving emergency healthcare in cities, enhancing the branding of government services like the MTDC, designing an efficient IT tool for tracking government documents needed by citizens and many others.

Prof Dr Uday Salunkhe ,Group Director-WeSchool commented , “India needs young talent who will not only strive for personal success as a corporate leaders or entrepreneurs but also on making the society a better place to live. One of the key initiatives that WeSchool has taken up towards nurturing its students is the AAA approach. AAA stands for Acquisition, Application and Assimilation of knowledge. The approach emphasizes students to learn through application of acquired knowledge and as the next step delve deeper to make meaning of the knowledge acquired & experience by understanding one’s roles & responsibilities towards business, relationships & society .Center for Creative Leadership has joined hands with WeSchool to mentor our young students into seekers and explorers in search of answers, that will heighten the sense of responsibility and cultural empathy, broaden the world view and assist them to create a new, higher ideal; an identity of self that they can relate to. As the vision of self will undergo a deep change, the young manager will move from responsive to transformative contribution to the society “

This initiative compelled the young MBAs-to-be to step out of the comfort zones of classroom learning, look closely at the fast- paced realities of the environment and come out with strong solutions that had the potential to be taken to a higher level .This endeavour not only changed their lenses but also tested their ability to accept failure and turn it into opportunities for higher degrees of success.

Safeguard today’s women to build a better tomorrow

Dr Rajan Welukar, Vice –Chancellor of University of Mumbai, Flavia Agnes- Women’s rights Activist-lawyer, Mona Cheriyan-HR Director- and member of the Advisory Board of ASK Investment Managers Pvt Ltd, Dolly Thakore- Theater director, actress and communication consultant and Praveen Salunkhe, Additional Commissioner of Police (Central Region, Mumbai) had a dialogue with the WeSchool students at the session that highlighted the nuances of women’s safety in society

“Sensitizing citizens through education is the remedy, especially in a youth dominated country like India. With ‘We link & We care ‘as our core value, WeSchool has a mandate of working for societal good by nurturing the Global citizen managers who are constantly involved in our various CSR activities” said Prof Dr Uday Salunkhe, Group Director-WeSchool in his welcome note.

While Dolly Thakore traced the historical perspective of the patriarchal male dominated society linking it to women abuse, she also focused on how empathetic playwrights like Vijay Tendulkar, Girish Karnad and others have portrayed sensitive pictures of the emancipation of women in Indian society. “Times are changing, patriarchy is being challenged and our voices are being heard “she added.

While narrating real life stories about female genocide from her daily crusade against the society and system, the firebrand activist Flavia Agnes said,” Why don’t we want to have girls? The government policy and hatred towards women collude to kill our daughters. Health and survival of a girl child is a big issue in spite of the political support, as it is not translating into safety and justice for our women “

While Mona Cheriyan brought in the corporate angle by saying “Diversity and inclusion have become the buzzwords in progressive corporates, a lot of women have broken the glass ceiling and achieved success in corporate careers but compared to our male counterparts we are just a few, as women comprise only 23 %of the Indian workforce. We need to make the change by breaking stereotypes, by being aware of our rights and taking our own decisions”.

ACP Praveen Salunkhe spoke from the heart,” Men think that daughters are a big liability, getting them married is a way of getting rid of them, this mindset has to change. How do we provide succor to all the women who are subjected to some violence or the other? Even if a victim of domestic violence dares to lodge a FIR, the doors of her home are closed for her, where is she supposed to go with her children? Out of the cases registered for rape last year,95 % accused were known to the girl and her family. The common man must change the mindset and come forward to support, police and law cannot be everywhere but together we can create a better society “

Dr Rajan Welukar, Vice chancellor –University of Mumbai had a word of advice to give,” Everyone in India is talking about violence against women but this is coming as a reaction. We have to go beyond reaction. We must learn to respond, by being responsive, our problems will resolve. We need to create the environment for women to feel safe by sharing the resources equally between men and women, by putting a stop to discrimination at home .I have immense faith in the youth as they have the ability to collaborate, co-create and come up with innovative solutions to change society”

The discussion enlightened the MBA students with suggestions and advices to fortify women’s safety through various measures, the urgent need to strengthen rules & regulations to curb the growing crimes against women. Women are an inevitable part of the society and it’s of utmost importance to encourage, empower and embolden them to build a better tomorrow. In a moving gesture to take this thought further , WeSchool pledged a donation in the name of each of the speaker at the session for the welfare of a tribal girl each through ‘Give India ‘foundation.

“ Charity begins at home “ said the young MMS students from team NIRVANA ,after successfully completing the blood donation drive at the Weschool campus that managed to collect 165 bags of blood for the blood starved city of Mumbai.

According to recent studies, Mumbai requires around 625 units of blood per day and about 20,000 units per month. One unit saves 3 lives and India faces a shortage of approx 60 lakh units of blood every year. After looking at the alarming figures, Sushrut Nikalje ,Tushar Chogale, Gajendra Ugile and Sushant Sutar from MMS 2012-14 batch came together to form team ‘ NIRVANA’ , to contribute their own mite for societal good by creating ‘Blood Connect ‘to provide sufficient amount of blood to the medical institutes across Mumbai from voluntary blood donation by students by creating awareness about their social responsibility. The blood donation drives were to be held by college students in coordination with respective NSS units, local blood banks and hospitals that would be benefited by this activity on a large scale. The idea was simple, implementable, sustainable, and measurable and socially relevant; which won them the prestigious MUNIJAN -Mumbai University New Initiative for Joint Action Now; held to mark the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi last year. MUNIJAN, over a period of time has become the symbol of activities to inculcate the values of social responsibility in the future leaders of India with the objective of bringing positive changes to the society at large by involving them in a series of constructive socially responsible initiatives.

The NIRVANA team however, did not choose to rest on their laurels .They went right ahead and implemented ‘Blood Connect’ at the WeSchool campus on Wednesday 27th Feb with the help of Nair Hospital and Sir J.J. Mahanagar Raktapedhi. The MMS students were supported by their counterparts in the PGDM (Healthcare) and social entrepreneurship cell of WeSchool. As the word spread through the campus, students, teachers and non-teaching staff made a beeline to the Spacebar and the team of doctors got busy with the collections. at the end of the day 165 bags of blood were collected by them.

” Voluntary donation requires a higher sense of social responsibility and duty. One must try to donate blood and see what joy, happiness and satisfaction one will experience as this gesture may save somebody’s life one day . While corporates donate millions for CSR efforts, a simple sponsored blood donation drive is a great way to complete your individual social responsibility “said the members of team NIRVANA.

“ Today’s youth are the people who can change the world, children and youth are working for their communities, their families, their cities, and their world. 21st century would belong to the Asian countries in which two giants China and India will play a major role. What makes India rich is its cultural and traditional heritage that it is believes in the principles of ‘Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam’ and ‘Sarve Santu Niramaya’. Youth empowered by such rich cultural heritage can bring about tremendous social change. Due to the rich historic and cultural heritage, Indian youth has an ability to dream about a better future of our country and realize it “ said Prof Dr Uday Salunkhe,while applauding the efforts made by team NIRVANA.

The successful implementation of this idea in WeSchool will be followed by implementing the same in other university affiliated colleges also.

It aims at improving quality of the service and the interaction between service provider and customer more fruitful and satisfying. And who wouldn’t like keeping their customers happy and satisfied.

The Jam that derives its name and nature from the musical jamming sessions has worldwide participation. It brings together professionals from multitude background. They are passionate about design based approach to problem solving and creativity. Teamed up, they put their heads together in spirit of experimentation, competition and cooperation configuring new service ideas based on the theme that is announced just at the outset.

These ideas can be in shape of a service, campaign, product or even website or portals. Jammers at Welingkar, Mumbai will have co-jammers from Nepal and Scotland in their groups. They will be mentored and faclitated in their efforts by design experts at Welingkar along with design professionals from Australia, Netherlands via Skype. The service designers will share their configurations with the world as they upload these on Sunday afternoon, after 48 hours of robust brainstorming .

The thrills of a Global Service Jam include working with professionals with diverse core competencies towards a common goal. You meet people who are completely new and possibly have different perspectives than yours. Each team tries to make the most of the strengths each team member brings to the table. This crossectional play of talent and competencies at times unfolds possibilities of distantly placed groups coming together professionally working on common ventures and dream projects. It broadens one’s perspective on the world. Besides it gives you better insights into the mind of your customers.
